iOS gaming: Pinball Fantasies HD

Oh the life of an I.T Technician. Here I am awake at 2:00am, after being called by one of our internal departments to advise lack of network access to critical systems. As the technician on rota to supply out of hours support this week its my job to get it sorted…..and I think we have…and as a consequence find myself at our kitchen table with big mug ‘o coffee, a VPN connection and awaiting a call back from said effected users, hopefully with a thumbs up.

Nothing doing but to sit here and wait….well, whist I’m I up I might as well take a look at the latest apps.

Woo, Pinball Fantasies HD remake for ios.

Yes the 1992 Amiga classic has been given a HD spit n polish, squeezed full frame onto the iPad screen (which in portrait mode is perfect for Pinball sims) and flippers that respond to touch.

The main menu showing the original four tables and includes a rendition of the Amiga theme tune complete with the same metallic/echo twang that I always think is synonymous with the Amiga sound chip.

20120731-022641.jpg

This iPad edition contains three view modes –

Classic mode gives a full screen top down view of the table.

20120731-023342.jpg

Standard mode gives a traditional tilted view of the entire table and thanks to the iPad’s impressive screen viewing angle, this mode plays really well when you have the iPad laid flat in front of you…almost like a real pinball table….well, with a little imagination anyway!

20120731-023726.jpg

20120731-023758.jpg

…and the normal mode with its ‘never takes its eye off the ball zoomy thing’ allowing you to have a good look at the impressive table graphics.

20120731-024217.jpg

It’s a pretty slick game and plays as just as expected and like any other iPad pinball sim. However if it wasn’t for nostalgia of revisiting now retro tables, I think it would be lost in the stack of other pinball apps. Good it is, but for my pinball fix, I’m sticking with Pinball Arcade.

Vectrex Regeneration coming soon.

One of my favourite old school platforms has to be the MB Vectrex console and my favourite modern day platform has to be the Apple iPad. Mash them together as an app and I would be a very VERY happy man if I could play Vectrex classics on the go.

Guess what :)

Vectrex Regeneration

30 years ago, a totally unique games console was launched using vector – not raster – graphics. It had such an impact that games are still being made for the platform today. We bought our first Vectrex in 1982 and we still love it! Built by Vectrex fanatics for a new generation of gamers. Vectrex Regeneration. Coming soon to iPhone and iPad.

From the press kit -

For iPad and iPhone.

All of the original Vectrex game releases included with the app.

In app purchase of new Vectrex indie and Homebrew games – please please please can someone include VeCave.

Full retina graphics mode for you lucky iPad 3 owners.

Can be played on a larger TV thanks to AirPlay.

Two player mode using additional Ipad/iPhone.

Auto Fire mode – Fortress of Narzod would be bonkers with auto fire : )

…and the best bit

It’s….ICADE COMPATIBLE!

As you can tell, am rather excited about this release….and let’s hope they release it soon!

Indie gaming bundle -July

The latest indie gaming bundle from Indie Royale is now available and contains six titles to get stuck into for just a few coins. I’m still working through some highly entertaining titles from the last two bundles (Escape Goat, taking up a considerable amount of time) and although i do like these bundles, I might skip this one as there’s only two titles that appeal.

Dual stick shooter Mutant Storm Reloaded.

Swift Stitch – because I’ll buy anything that uses vector graphics.

Having said that, at this price, its worth just to have a looksee at the others.

One bundle that has caught my attention though is the ‘Build a bundle no.2′ which offers a whopping 12 indie games for just $8 (or build your own bundle at $1 per game – minimum three titles)..

A sample of what’s on offer.

I’ve just brought this lot and am especially looking forward to sampling Team 17′s Alien Breed Impact, Depth Hunter & the Crimson Skies-like aerial schmup – Dog Fighter.

Vector Arcade machines – Andy’s arcade

Here’s a great resource for fans of classic vector based arcade game –

Andysarcade.de

Here you’ll find whole heap of info about the companies that produced them, the games themselves and plenty of photos, marquee, artwork and flyers etc.

Although its not been updated for a while, the diary of the restoration of classic Star Wars cockpit arcade machine is well worth a look.

I’ve been playing quite a lot of Atari’s Lunar Lander whilst on holiday via the Atari iOS collection as well as being reacquainted with my MB Vectrex and so this was a rather nice place to visit inbetween gaming sessions.

May I also recommend these three brilliant remakes of classic vector games from http://tardis.dk/wordpress/

Nintendo Namco Polystation….huh?

20120720-114435.jpg

Whilst visiting the Maritime museum in Liverpool (which, might I add, has a fascinating Titanic exhibition on display until next spring) we dropped down into the basement area to look at smuggling, piracy and import/export exhibitions.

Although I couldn’t see any reference to Monkey Island, something caught my eye in one of the display cabinets that contained examples of fake goods seized and confiscated by customs officials.

Nintendo Namco Polystation…..what the?

20120720-115046.jpg

It’s a poor photo as the lighting was quite bright in the cabinet so here’s another image I found via Google.

20120720-115504.jpg

This isn’t as you’ve probably guessed a product of Nintendo, Namco or indeed Sony. Nor is it an early prototype Playstation…in fact, its not even CD based (despite the screenshots on the back of the box depicting PSX games), nope this is one of many NES/Famicom clones out there cleverly packaged in an attempt to dupe the unsuspecting gamer….or said gamers parents into thinking they might be picking up a bargain priced console for Junior :)

The Polystation is just one example of the fascinating knock offs out there and is an area of retro gaming that I’ve never looked at before. Bookmarked for when i got home, it’s been an hilarious trip around the net this morning looking at the weird and wonderful world of the clones..and might I add, some that I’d like to track down myself!

Great name and as expected, crappy console :)

Comp modded ZX Spectrum.

Am back from our week away exploring Manchester, the Lake District and Liverpool and whilst in the area ‘up north’, I popped in to see my good mate JT and also to take a looksee at his latest retro gaming goodies.

Not only having a one hellava monster Jamma cab, JT now has a lovely new/old Silent Scope gun. Couldn’t shoot for buggery with it myself therefore had to hand it back to the marksmen to see how it’s done :)

20120719-191003.jpg

20120719-191146.jpg

Whilst sampling TMNT 2 on JT’s Capcom Impress cabinet (which might I add, is a pleasure to play on and am seriously thinking about getting one of these cabs myself), modifications on my 48k Speccy began.

Composite modding and the results compared to RF is amazing. Thank you very much mate.

20120719-191759.jpg

Now maybe JT can explain how this works much better on his own blog than i can, but was hugely impressed with a conversion of the Mega CD FMV classic Road Avenger playing on a standard SNES!

Sd2snes cartridge.

20120719-192700.jpg

I also collected my MB Vectrex and a few other bits whilst i was thetcance I’ll be testing out my DIY colour overlays before I send it down to the Retro Computer Museum.

…but before that, I still have a few days off work and intend to hook up my DivIDE to my modded Speccy for some static free gaming – thanks again JT!

DivIDE testing.

Oops, I’d forgotten I’d shot this video last saturday after finally getting chance to unboxing my DivIDE and test it out with a few ZX Spectrums. The wait was worth it, outstanding stuff indeed.

This is the new 2k11 model from Lotharek but until I’m next due down at the Retro Computer Museum I won’t be able to compare it with the others.

It’s not clear on the video but there’s a pass thru edge connector on the board which in effect would allow me to daisy chain another interface card. I’ve not tested it yet but it would be great to be able to include my new (old) Currah speech card into the mix of Frankenstein machinery sticking out the back of my 48k Speccy…poor thing looks frightened :)

Classic Alien Breed coming to iOS?

Oh yes please!

20120710-193156.jpg

Excerpt from Team 17 website -

The original game is back in action, celebrating its 21st Anniversary!

Alien Breed is the classic sci-fi, top-down shooter developed by Team17. Launching originally in 1991, Alien Breed has now been remade for iOS, which can only mean one thing… it’s time to turn down the lights, turn up the sounds and encounter Alien Breed again!

Features:
•Classic Mode – Play using the original graphics, music and controls.
•Enhanced Mode – Featuring enhanced graphics, audio and controls.
•4 New Levels – entirely new levels that intersect with the original Alien Breed story
•6 original Alien Breed levels
•12 Alien Breed Special Edition levels
•iCloud
•Game Center leaderboards and achievements
•Retina Display

I’ve read elsewhere that there will also iCade support despite no mention above – Let’s hope it’s true.

One more thing – 21st Anniversary!…where’s time gone!

Enough Strawberries….now Raspberries

Hopes dashed again for a Brit to win Wimbledon :( Nevermind, it was a great match and who knows, maybe a gold in the Olympics?

I’ve eaten my fair share of Strawberries today and am just finishing off the last as I prep a SD card for use with my Raspberry PI. I’ve only confirmed the board works a few days ago at work and so am looking forward to having it home, sitting down and having a good play with it.

It didn’t take long to prep the SD. Download the O/S image and use a utility to transfer to the SD card and make bootable as per instructions

X running and ready to rock….oh wait, have got the tv speaker on mute ;)

20120708-214114.jpg

So tonight, it’s mainly been about finding my way around and simply dabbling within the O/S Although slow at times (especially when web browsing) it’s still amazing to think that something so small is capable of being a (basic) desktop computer.

Over the next few weeks am looking forward to trying out all those cool projects like xbmc, advmame and Zx Spectrum Fuse. Of course, that’s after the Quake III fragfest.

So, first impressions are good so far. How are you getting on with your Pi?

Game, set, match – retro tennis games

The Wimbledon tennis championship is here once again and maybe, just maybe, a Brit will win the mens finals today. 75 years is a long time to wait! If not then there’s always next year, or the year after, or indeed the year after….and maybe a few more after that?

So to get into the spirit, and to accompany a rather large tub of strawberries collected from the garden, I’ve been at the geek desk this weekend waving about my pixel racket on some of my favourite tennis simulators of yesteryear.

International 3D Tennis – Commodore 64.

I nearly passed this one over whilst browsing at the local software store – those primitive vector graphics and simple two tone colour scheme didn’t look too hot when viewing static screenshots on the back of the box (unlike the tantalisingly beautiful Amiga version).

20120708-130640.jpg

International 3D Tennis had been awarding a lofty score of 94% when reviewed in that month in Zzap 64 magazine (June 1990) – Praised for its unique graphics, control mechanics, I decided to go for it as they’d rarely let me down. They didn’t, I wasn’t disappointed, it’s a cracking game and more of a thinking mans game than all out arcade action.

Unlike most tennis games, you do not control the movement of the your player. Instead the CPU looks after all that running around giving you full joystick control over the type of shot you wish to play. It takes a little getting used to but it works really well. My only criticism is that, quite often you wish the game would speed up a little.

Presentation in the game though was outstanding, it’s TV styling was unlike anything before on the c64. Back in the days before multiview and freeform 3D views…or EA Sports, this was cutting edge stuff even though it does look a bit comically basic these days.

Tennis – Nintendo Gameboy.

Its hard to put down Tennis on the Gameboy (or the original NES release for that matter) and is one of three GB carts I regularly pop in the slot for a quick go. This is what the Gameboy excels in, simple pick up and play, fun addictive gameplay….and a hint of Mario.

20120708-130846.jpg

…and just when though Gameboy Tennis couldn’t get any better, I was lucky enough to borrow my friends Nintendo Virtual Boy with Flash Boy cartridge enabling me to sample the quite literally ‘in your face’ 3D version of Tennis.

Superb console, superb game, not so superb headache after playing or too long :)

20120703-191252.jpg

Great Courts 2 – Commodore Amiga.

Being the last week of June/first week in July, Wimbledon, for myself, is also synonymous with something else far less unpleasant. It’s usually this time of year that I suffer with Hayfever and although these days it’s quite mild lasting only a few weeks, as a kid it would go on for months. Its a good job really as i’m green fingered fellow that spends an awful lot of time in the garden! My older brother suffers too and after purchasing his first house he created a games room that was complete with filtered air conditioning, ice dispenser, mini bar, copious amounts of snacks and a selection of, then current gaming systems including his beloved Amiga.

During high pollen count summer weekends this was refuge and we’d hole up there all afternoon in that cool, sneeze free den and play all manner of 2-up Amiga games….and one in particular, Great Courts 2 springs to mind when Wimbledon fever sweeps the nation.

Of all the retro tennis games to play with a buddy, then this is the one to go for. Firstly, it looks and moves great, has a good selection of court surfaces and has control interface that easy to pickup and intuitive enough to reward players who practise. Best of all the two player mode allows you to team up with a buddy and compete on the same side again CPU controlled opponents.

20120708-131112.jpg

Virtual Tennis – Sega Dreamcast

At first I didn’t like it. Sure it looks great but I think I preferred the old 8/16 bit style and didn’t really give it that much attention the first time around. That changed when I brought VGA box for my Dreamcast and, needing a break from Schmups, I thought I’d try it again.

20120708-131520.jpg

Woo, glad i did, it’s a great game of tennis with enough fun mini games to keep it fresh and help improve your game. Despite being an old game, many of the actual tennis players are still playing today allowing recreate some of what you see on the tv today.

Super Tennis – Nintendo SNES

An early release game that showed off the new consoles mode 7 graphic abilities to great effect. Having all those extra buttons on the SNES gamepad including those rather useful shoulder buttons for diving towards the ball made for a great tennis game.

Options galore in this game and probably the most fun, single or 2-up than any of the above.

20120708-132317.jpg

Have also been enjoying Match Point on the ZX Spectrum and, although not strictly tennis, involve some sort of rackets and ball – Ping Pong and digital speech-tastic Jonah Barringtons Squash.

Finally, here’s something a bit newer which i’ll be dipping in and out of during today’s finals.

Stick Tennis (free) Apple iPad

Like International 3D tennis, the CPU handles your players movement, allowing you to concentrate on your shots speed and angle which is played by swiping the touch screen.

20120708-133242.jpg

Right, feet up, TV on, Strawberries at the ready, let the game begin.

20120708-141718.jpg

Game Dock – kickstarter project.

Another exciting kickstarter project for iPhone/iPad gamers. Its a new dock that allows you to connect your idevice to a TV for large screen gaming and has two connection for physical games pads. Games that have iCade support are said to work with it and so I guess that this would include all of those lovely iCade supported emulators too?

20120703-183518.jpg

A worthy cause and one that gets my donation. Let’s see if they can reach the fund total in time allowing this thing to go into production.

More icade goodness.

Woo,looks like the latest iOS gadgets from makers of the iCade are finally starting to appear in online store. Ever since the sneak previews at CES, I’ve been keen to check these out.

Icade Jnr for iPhone.

20120702-191135.jpg

Tempting, but now as a user of the iPad iCade, wouldn’t this jnr model be relegated to the drawer in favour of a larger screen and more buttons. Looks cool though doesn’t it?

Here’s the one for me, the iCade Mobile, aka the Atari iHandy :) I’ve always like the Atari Lynx, not the slimmer MK2 but the chunky ‘that’s no moon’ Mk1 brick. Thankfully this one probably won’t need a battery change everything you complete a level.

I’m loving the fact that it’s got eight buttons including shoulder buttons so that should be Street Fight II via iMame sorted. Am also loving the rotate feature allowing quick orientation between horizontal and vertical viewing – just like this overacting chap in the video.

20120702-194113.jpg

Let’s hope that both have quality controls that don’t need a hammer to respond. Definitely worth hunting out to try.

Eye spy something beginning with Pi

Monday morning, not the best time to discover the kitchen sink is both blocked and is wet in the cupboard underneath. It must be fate really as stopping to fix it (thanks YouTube) meant that I was home to answer the door when the postman rang.

Could it be?…Yup, my Rasberry Pi has finally arrived. Woo, with a free gift too.

Sporting Pi like a proper geek :)

20120702-133347.jpg

At work and as a quick test, fired it up using my colleges SD card that he was using on his own Pi.

All systems go, let the Dremel work begin.
