Retro Gaming: Skate or Die – C64

Up high on my list of favorite Commodore C64 games is Skate or Die by Electronic Arts which was released in 1987. I used to play this a lot with friends way back when and would often load it in conjuction with other multi-event games (Californian Games, Summer, Winter and World games by Epyx) to form one huge sporting competition. Even today it still plays really well, and thanks to the disk version, hardly any load times.

Players can compete in the event individually or sequentially with up to eight players all competing for the title of best skater. The first event ‘freestyle’ is probably my most favorite as you try to rack up the points performing as many tricks on the halfpipe ramp as you can within ten passes. Extra speed can be gained by pressing the fire button as you skate over the two shaded areas of the ramp which is a must if you want to get enough height to pull of 108o or more rotation.

Only 325 points after 5 passes, I need more practice!

Next is the highjump which again is on the halfpipe ramp. Simply hammering furiously at the left and right keys will build up your speed and get you the best jump height. For extra flair, tap the fire button to perform a skateboard grab.

Jam is the name of the next event which see you race against your opponent down a back alley street navigating or  jumping over obstacles as you jockey for the lead position. Get close to you opponent and you can give him a good kick which, is  rather unsporting, but loads of fun! This event is full of humurous aniamation such as when you fall into an uncovered manhole, or skating through a chainlink fence see your character getting sliced and diced. For extra panache, jump on to the bonnet of the police car at the end of the race.

Bad boys.

The next event is another of my favorites as you race the downhill  circuit as fast as you can, again navigate obstacles and ramps. There’s a couple of different routes that you can take but i always like to hit this large ramp to gain speed.  Like the Jam event, this level is full of great little animations should you get things wrong.

The last event is rather a bizarre one, but probably the most fun when played with a friend. Skating inside an empty swimming pool the the object is knock your opponent over with a jousting pole. It’s very surreal but it’s a hilariously game of cat and mouse…on skateboards!

Come ‘ere Pete, I’ve got something for you!

..and of course, I can’t write about Skate or Die without mention of that incredible loading tune by the legendary SID chip musician Rob Hubbard. The first time I heard it i couldn’t believe my trusty breadbin C64 was capable of such things.

Retro Gaming: WonderBoy – Sega Master System

I just love those early Sega Master System game box covers!

Another retro gaming gem this time with Sega’s brilliant little platformer, Wonder Boy on the Sega Master System.

As Tom-Tom the Wonder Boy, it’s up to you to rescue your girlfriend Tanya from the vile clutches of the monster that has kidnapped her. To do so, you must navigate a series of worlds in a race against time to reach your goal.

Along the way, you’ll battle foes and collect fruit that will add to the amount of time you have to complete your mission. You can also receive helpful power-ups from various eggs, but make sure to avoid the bad eggs and poisonous mushrooms that sap your precious vitality.

Find the magic doll in each level to open up hidden areas, and make it to the very end of your journey to rescue your one true love.’

Back in the 80′s we used to holiday on the east coast and one such amusement arcade (Smiths Arcade) always stocked some of the best and popular arcade machines of the time. Wonderboy was always a firm favorite of mine and became quite good on it that a single credit would last me a good hour (which was also great when you had to manage your hard-earned holiday money as a child).

Next to the original arcade version, the Sega Master System port is by far my favorite with colorful graphics and almost perfect renditions of those catchy game tunes. It still plays as well today and is a cherished cartridge in my collection.  Original copies can be found for next to nothing so if you still have a Master System, I highly recommend you seek one out. Alternatively, the Master System port can be found on VC for the Nintendo Wii.

Right, time to find a hammer.

Level 2, cloud hopping

Level 3, underground

Here’s the first boss, a few hammers thrown into his head should do the trick. Just watch out for the odd fireball he throws.

Retro Computer Museum Gaming Event – May’10

Yesterday’s RCM gaming event was by far the best to date, packed to the rafters with lots of old comps & consoles it truly was a retro gamers paradise!

Despite getting lost on the drive down (again!) I just made it in time to bag the last of the limited car park spaces (again!). After picking up my ticket, I ventured in and immediately was hit by the sights and sounds of pixel on pixel as grinning old school gamers sat down & prepared to play. This was going to be good!

Centre hallway.

2-up Sega Rally

Sega Afterburner arcade machine…I need change!

…and more change!

After saying hello to a few familiar faces and unpacked my car with a few items I’d donated to RCM, grabbed myself a coffee and took a leisurely walk around eyeballing all that electronic candy. A quick browse around the retro gear vendors and spotted quite a few carts for my collection as well as issue three of RG magazine that’s missing from my collection.

Woo, Wonderboy III for Sega MasterSystem.

Being a Commodore user, these were my first port of call and RCM had pretty much all models to plays with from the PET right up to the Amiga A4000.

…and one that drew quite a bit of attention. The ‘ZX Specadore’ with matching ‘Sinclair’ 1541 disk drive – sacrilegious!

The ever popular Super Bomberman tournament starts and like last year I ‘bombed’ out in the first round.

The booby prize went to Mike for the most amount of times he’d bombed himself. A brilliant  prize and hilarious as he tried to give it back!

Rise of the Robots anyone….no?

After lunch, time to get down to some serious button bashing

Phu’s homemade Acorn Atom..tech porn!

…..and yours truly sporting a dapper pair of Sega Master System 3D glasses…and getting very dizzy!

Andy and Co. really but on a great show and a day to remember and it was great to catchup with friends and make lots of new ones. Winning a load of Sega stuff on the raffle and being introduced to the amazing Starblade on the Panasonic 3DO was the perfect finish to an amazing day.

More Retro Computer events to attend.

I’ve got three more retro computer events to add to this years calendar. Tickets & hotels booked!

16th May (next weekend…yay!) is the Retro Computer Museum gaming event. This will be my fourth RCM event and Andy and co. put on brilliant show that’s packed to the rafters with all manner of old computers, consoles and games.

Previous RCM posts can be found in my blog archives (May ’09, Aug ’09 & Nov ’09)

I speak to the RCM members on a regular basis and it’s these warm, friendly & like-minded people who really make these events so appealing. Not to mention that the first RCM event I attended opened my eyes to a lot more classic systems that I’d previously overlooked in the past and some, in the case of the MB Vectrex,  spurred me on to locate and buy my own (http://stiggyblog.wordpress.com/2009/10/21/my-vectrex-retro-gaming-chic/ )

The next event is being run by the National Museum of Computing over the weekend of June 19th/20th and is being held at the famous Bletchley Park.

http://www.tnmoc.org/vcf-gb.aspx

Not only is this going to be one HUGE vintage computer event (including a representation from RCM), Bletchley Park museum holds many truly amazing historical items from the past including Enigma, Lorenz and Bombe cipher machines and a rebuild of the mighty Colossus. Set in the beautiful grounds of Bletchely park I’m hoping for good summer weather and plenty of photo opportunities!

..and finally over the weekend of 6/7th November i’ll be heading up north to the seaside to attend R3play.

These guys put on one helluva show last September at Retro Reunited (see previous post – http://stiggyblog.wordpress.com/2009/09/14/retro-reunited-09/ ) therefore I’m really looking forward to this years  ‘BIG’ retro gaming event.

Unconfirmed yet is another RCM event that might possibly to be held in November and also that enough RCM folk can persuade Andy into setting up another member only gaming evening sometime this year. The last one was superb!

Retro Gaming events (photo uploads)

I’m just wading through my collection of images taken at various Retro Gaming/Computer events I’ve attended and uploaded them to Computing & Gaming Events Union website.

http://www.cgeu.info

I’m awaiting the site admins to move them over to my own folder but if you’re interested you should be able to locate them in the RCM Events (May & November 2009) uploads folder.

Wireless IP PTZ Camera.

Well, since putting up the new bird table a few weeks ago, I haven’t seen many birds using it yet :-(   There’s plenty in the trees eating from our hanging feeders but I seemed to be miss any that fly down for a bite. I know we’ve had a few visitors judging by the consumed bird seed that disappears.

Curstie was in the kitchen and spotted a female blackbird that landed & was digging around in the seeds whilst the male kept lookout from the bird table roof. I of course, with camera in tow, missed all the action. So, until visitors become more frequent, I thought I’d buy a wireless IP camera to record any further action.

Here’s the feature list -

Wireless 80211B/G compliant

Remote Pan, Tilt and Zoom

Day and night vision mode

Motion Detection

Supports fixed, DCHP, PPPOE connection methods

Multilevel user management

Server/Web-based control, record, alert record & playback functions as well as email and FTP alerts

Built in microphone and speaker for intercom chat via web browser (this should be fun!)

Supports domain names.

IP DVR software (which can support multiple camera’s should I decide to buy more and set up my own CCTV system).

It should be a fun device to play around with when it arrives and if I do get any good footage I’ll post my YouTube links.

Retro Gaming: Treasure Island (Commodore Plus/4)

Treasure Island on the Commodore Plus/4 holds special memories for me. Not only was this brilliant little machine my first home computer, Treasure Island was one of the eleven bundled games that formed the ‘Plus’ pack, and is the one that kept me entertained for many hours until it was completed.

Although the retail version of the cassette cover featured painted artwork, I still prefer the basic and minimalist look of those original bundled games (with the exception of  Harbour Attack)

Starting off the game with memorable little title tune, the aim is to guide your man ‘Jim Hawkins’ around Treasure Islands maze of pathways as you search to collect hidden treasure before Long John Silver can get his (one) mitt on it. Enemy pirates stand in your way and if you get to close to some of them, they’ll throw their cutlass at you. Fortunately, you can out run these piratey flying swords, pick them up when they lose momentum and lob them back to kill them…Yaarg!

Thus is the key to winning the game as spare swords are very scarce and can only be used once. I remember as a kid jotting down which pirates I would need to kill, which ones to dodge and which ones to collect their sword and use it on a different pirate that’s blocking another path.

I still own my Commodore Plus/4 but alas Treasure Island is no more after the Datasette unit decided to eat the tape many moons ago. It’s still one title I need to hunt down again and add back to my ‘Booty’ :-)
